Dear Brendan, this is for you.
I was walking on the old 7-mile bridge in the Florida Keys when I noticed a memorial plaque to a "Brendan Tevlin." It touched me enough to look for info on you online. I found some tragic information and was so touched by it I wanted to write this to you even if you are not the Bredan on the bridge.
With obsolute certainty I believe that, in your earth life, you were not merely remarkable, but the quintessential archetype of the highest, most exemplary model of humanity. I am almost old enough to be your grampa and have been on the planet long enough to know a pretty wide spectrum of humanity and see that you clearly were in the highest end of that spectrum.
So, this is really just to say that although I never knew you, I am proud of you and wanted to thank you for being such a shining example of what we, as humans, can aspire to...even though most of us will most likely not reach your level.
Sincerely, Dave
PS...I love the bagpipes!

When I heard the horrific news about Brendan, I was in disbelief for how can this happen to a wonderful, young, happy, thriving, person and his family. It is not suppose to be this way. MY heart aches for all of you . I am praying so hard for you to find strength to get you through and get to where his memory is a strong part of your daily life. One thing I know is he had an amazing family filled with love that he took with him. He has that forever as you all do. MY family has nothing but wonderful things to say about Brendan, we will forever keep him close in our hearts. While there are no words to make this better, just know we love you all and we are praying every day . Our condolence to the whole family. May God give you all the strength in facing this predicament. We all questioned why this happened to a wonderful, young guy who has yet to accomplish his dream and reach his bright future. No one can really give us an answer that can provide peace especially to your family. The only reassurance we all have is that "he is now with our Heavely Father in heaven." Rest in Peace Brendan! My daughter, Dana, attended 1st grade with Brendan at Hillside. Though I hadn't seen him since, I so vividly remember his smile and his blonde hair.
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Brendan will always live on in your heart and in your memories. May God bless you all. We will keep you all in our prayers.

I didn't know Brendan very well while he was at SHP, but what was clear to anyone that even walked the halls with him was that he represented everything a young man should strive to be. He embodied kindness, affection, and "good vibes and easy living." Being across the country, I am devastated that I wasn't able to attend the services today but the responses I've heard suggest that they were fitting for the nature of who Brendan really was. As president of SHP, I can assure all that he will never be forgotten, that he will live on in the halls of The Prep and in the hearts of the students who encountered him, and that the entire Tevlin family, especially Brian, will feel the love and spirit of this school everyday.

Our heartfelt sympathies to the Tevlin family during this unspeakably difficult time in their lives. May your faith bring you comfort and strength. Brendan, the Tevlins and extended family will remain in our prayers.
I had the honor and privilege of attending high school with Brendan for three years, and I can attest to the truth in the words being expressed about him. He represented the ideals of Seton Hall Prep every day of his life. "Esto Vir" means "Be a Man", and Brendan absolutely grew into a man at The Prep, living a life of extraordinary excellence in academics, athletics, service, and leadership. He loved life and loved others as we all love him.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Brendan however I knew him through my daughter Britta Anderson Loftus. Britta just completed her first year at the Univ. of Richmond along with your son. Britta informed me early on that she and Brendan became very close. They enjoyed each others humor, attended several dances together and Brendan tutored Britta in Calculus. Britta often remarked how Brendan was witty, brilliant and "stunningly" cute. When Britta first arrived at Richmond she felt awkward and insecure, Brendan was the first student who made her feel comfortable and initiated a real friendship.
Brendan was a significant presence in my daughter's life in which we will never forget. Britta frequently sent me photos of them together or would call to tell me about their dates. Words cannot express how sorry I am about this horrific tragedy. Brendan was an outstanding young man who touched our lives in a profoundly positive way, he will live in our hearts forever.

I didn't know Brendan nor his family but wanted to express my sympathy to his family and friends. I am so moved by the outpouring of love for Brendan - he certainly was a special young man. I am a former resident of both Livingston and West Orange and know how these communities come together at a time like this. May God bless you all and comfort you during this difficult time.

There are truly no words to express our heartfelt sympathy to your family. We, like so many, cannot wrap ourselves around this horrific tragedy. It seems like only yesterday when Brendan left the American league travel baseball team to pursue his love of lacrosse. And it was only a moment ago that he took Stephen (and many others) around Seton Hall Prep as Freshman for a day. Brendan is truly every parent's dream and his memory will live on in all of us who had the good fortune to have been graced with his presence. God bless you and may Brendan rest in peace.

I wanted to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you and your entire family. I will continue to pray for all of you. The final words spoken by the priest at my mom's funeral were "until we meet again". To the family of Brendan Tevlin...I wish to send my sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear son. You don't know me...but one year ago on June 26, 2013, my 19-year old son was also shot and killed in Paterson, hours after his graduation from Wayne Valley High School. He was set up for a robbery by a former classmate and killed in the process. When I heard Brendan's story, my heart sank; another great kid gone because of some senseless act of violence. In our case, the murderers were captured fairly quicky and still remain in prison on $2,000,000 cash only bail. The criminal justice system moves slowly and as we have learned, the only justice IS for the criminal because nothing can bring your child or my child back. Our hearts bleed for you and I want you to know that if there is anything that we can do to help you get through this terrible tragedy, please contact me. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Unfortunately it takes a tragedy such as this, for a community to come together and show support and love for a grieving family. Exactly what the residents of livingston have done.
