John F. Madden
John Francis Madden, 60, of West Orange, NJ, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2024, at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ, surrounded by his beloved family.
John was born on February 18, 1964, in Jersey City, NJ, to Mike and Peg Madden. He attended Hudson Catholic High School in Jersey City and later went on to St. Peter’s College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting. For over 20 years, John worked as an accountant at the Bank of New York on Wall Street, his last position being a managing director.
John was known for his big and gentle heart, passion for the New York Rangers, and unwavering Irish pride. A proud first-generation American, John loved his Irish roots and returned to his parents’ hometowns of Portumna, Co. Galway, and Newmarket, Co. Cork, many times throughout his life to visit his close-knit extended family and dear friends. He also looked forward to his family’s annual trips to Long Beach Island, where he spent memorable summers with his wife, Darlene, and sons, Mike and Sean. Though born and bred in Jersey City, John inherited his father’s green thumb and kept an extensive garden where he proudly grew herbs and vegetables his family and neighbors came to enjoy over the years.
John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Darlene; his sons Mike (Colleen) and Sean Madden; siblings Michael (Betsy) Madden and Peggie (George) Marano; in-laws Debbie (Joe) Fagan and Elena (Angelo) Bolcato; nieces Jessie (Mike) Stone, Laura (Johnathan) Saunders, Kathryn and Maggie Marano, and nephews John Marano and Joe Fagan. He was preceded in death by his parents Mike and Peg, mother-in-law Lu Wetzel, and nieces Abby and Emily Madden.
