Noel was a genius. A man of few words but when he spoke, you knew to listen. When I was a little girl, he would watch Jeopardy with us; myself, my father, and older brother. We made our own game out of it! I created a score card and would keep track of which answers they got correct. Noel would almost always get every answer right!
Noel and his sister Phyllis were our cousins, but were more like a very close brother to my father. I always looked up to them. They were so artistic, so smart, so funny, and kind.
Noel and Phyllis deserve as much recognition as possible for their incredible achievements as authors and teachers. They touched many lives and will always be remembered for the incredible ways they shared their joy of art, music, and teaching.
Here is a wonderful quote from them that I happened to come across online:
“Memories. Our grandfather’s moustache, grey and neat; a gift of a dollar, to hide when he visited; the sound of Sicilian to our blind ears. We never understood a word our taciturn grandfather said. We wish we had. Everyone attested that the man had a cutting wit.
What is most searing in our childhood memories is visiting grandpa Natale at his produce pushcart, one of many on Mott Street. That each vendor hid a plum in the hanging scale’s basket— for a little extra profit–was part of doing business in the Italian neighborhood. When one woman complained about the plum, my grandfather unapologetically replied that she should be grateful it wasn’t three peaches. Everyone knew the dance of commerce in Little Italy.
We, brother and sister writers Phyllis and Noel Fiarotta, have enjoyed a career that includes 30 craft, science, and activity books for children and a 15-year syndicated column. Perhaps it’s time for a book on the joys of being Italian.”
What makes me feel better is knowing that Noel is with his sister and my father and that they are all finally without pain. I miss them all and will see them again one day.
