Joseph H. Barthel, 90 - Joseph H. Barthel, 90 Joseph H. Barthel,90, of West Orange passed away on Monday September 2, 2013. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday September 7, 2013 at The Dangler Funeral Home of West Orange, 340 Main Street, West Orange at 10:00 AM, then to Saint John's Church,94 Ridge Street in Orange for the Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, 225 Ridgedale Avenue in East Hanover. Visiting will be Friday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's name to St. John's Repair Fund, 94 Ridge Street, Orange, NJ 07050. The son of Joseph & Bella Barthel, Joe grew up in Newark until he met, Marie, the love of his life. In 1949, they married and began their special life together settling in "The Oranges" and raising their family. Joe served in the Navy during World War II. As the family grew, Joe began his career in 1957 as an Essex County Sheriff's Officer which he continued until 1987. Never one to shy away from hard work, in 1967 he took on a second job working in the Liquor Department at the A & P which he continued well into his so called retirement until 2010. Joe believed in giving back to his Community and proved this by his many actions. He served as President and Treasurer of the Essex County Employees Association, President of St. John Church Holy Name Society, President of St. John School PTO, St. John Church Parish Council as well as Lector, Usher and Eucharistic Minister at St. John Church, a Member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Orange Board of Adjustment. Joe was honored with The Jubilee Medal Pro Meritis from the Archdiocese of Newark. The most important things in Joe's life were God and family and he dedicated his life to both. Mr. Barthel is survived by his loving wife, Marie, of 64 years, his daughters, Susan Zieleniewski (John), Janet Proscia (Russell), Lois Hatton and Laura Wold (Albert) along with his grandchildren Mark Dillon, Amanda and Adam Hatton and Christopher Wold. He is predeceased by his grandson Matthew, sister, Ruth Barthel and brothers John, Anton and William Barthel. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
