Obituary of Michael Eugene Phelan

Michael Eugene Phelan, 62 - Michael E. Phelan, 62, of West Orange passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013, at The Dangler Funeral Home of West Orange, 340 Main Street, West Orange at 8:30 AM then to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1 Eagle Rock Ave. in West Orange for the Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. Interment will be private. Visiting will be Thursday 4-8 PM. Letters of condolence may be posted at . Michael was born in Orange and was a lifelong resident of West Orange. He was a Maintenance Supervisor working for the United States Department of Defense in West Orange for 29 years. Mr. Phelan proudly served in the United States Army National Guard from 1969 to 2012, having served faithfully and honorably, was retired as Sergeant First Class. During that time, he was a member of the 2/102nd Armor, 102nd/50th Cavalry, and then went on to serve as a Senior Instructor for Regional Training Site - Maintenance out of Fort Dix, NJ. Michael served as President of AFGE Local 371 and was also a member of the Essex Troop in West Orange. Additionally, he worked in Security for over 20 years at Green Hill Retirement Community in West Orange. Michael was the beloved husband of 37 years of Mary Phelan (nee Wannemacher). Devoted father of Suzanne Phelan and Julie Johnson and her husband Douglas. Loving brother of Mary Metz, Kathleen Bolan, and the late Patrick and William Phelan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and his devoted walking buddy, his dog Finnegan.
