About a decade ago, longer for many of us, our current group of buddies began forming at what is called the AP European History Reading. For 7 days, every June, we have read and graded the essays written by AP European History students. For the past 5 years we have met in Kansas City, Mo. Our geographic backgrounds were diverse. I along with Nick Chiorian teach in the Cleveland Ohio area. Karsten Klint is from Cincinnatti, Chris Kane is in Virginia and Mark Konnert and Al Olsen are Canadians. Along with Peter Porter we shared many happy memories together. Our gang became our family while we were away from our families. We had most of our meals together, went to baseball games and some of us, including Peter played golf.
Pete was a very important part of our group. We loved hearing his stories of teaching history and his trips to far away places accompanied by his students (did he have to send us so many pictures?). He had a great love for his family, friends and job. His sparkling eyes and infectious laugh made it easy to become engaged in his warmth and companionship.
On behalf of all his Reading buddies I assure you we will miss him greatly. We offer our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students.

I met Peter on our trip to Normandy in 2011. He had a huge impact on me in such a short time. Such a great man. He will be missed. I'll cherish the memories of our trip forever. God bless.
In the years since the trip, we would message each other on occasion and talk about our beloved Dallas Cowboys and life in general.

Dear Mr. Porter- It has taken me a while to process the fact that you are gone from this Earth and will not be there to make a difference in the lives of future students. I was placed in your honors world history class as a sophomore when i moved here from texas and you welcomed me with open arms and a huge smile. every time i saw you, you would yell out "JAC" and i would yell back "peter porter!"- this was our own version of marco polo. you might not have know this then, but i will tell you now- you saved me during high school as i could rely on you every day to put a smile on my face and offer me a place to eat lunch or a shoulder to cry on or a hug when times were tough. High school was hard for me, but you made my short time at MTHS worth it and looked out for me as a father would for a daughter. I am forever grateful for our time together, however short. Someday, i hope to have as big of an impact on my students as you did on yours. you will be forever missed.

Of all the teachers I had in high school, Mr. Porter had the biggest influence on my life- and I know that there are countless other students who would say the same thing. I did National History Day with Mr. Porter (and was part of the first group to ever make the National competition in Washington DC). National History Day changed my life and doing the research for my NHD project grounded me and gave me purpose during one of the hardest periods of my life. My life was forever changed my junior year when I got a scholarship to attend University of Maryland through History Day, something that would have never happened without Mr. Porter. I am sad for his family and current students but also for the students who did not get to experience his teaching. As I'm thinking about what MTHS is going through this week I remember how Mr. Porter was so kind to me after Mrs. Jonsson died and specifically tried to find me in the hallway the day after to make sure I was okay. I hope that other MTHS teachers are seeking out students they know are affected this week just like he did. Mr. Porter was the first teacher who treated me like I was an adult or worthy of being an equal and I will never forget him.

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Porter as a professor at Seton Hall last year and to say it was a pleasure is an understatement. Always looked forward to going to class and talking about the Cowboys with him. A truly amazing teacher and person. He will be sincerely missed but he certainly leaves behind a wonderful legacy. His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our deepest condolences to the Porter family. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Porter as our daughter was a history student of his for two years at Montville High School as well as very involved in History Club. We all remember our favorite and most influential teacher and I can honestly state that Mr. Porter was that and more to our daughter. Not only was he a great educator but he was her mentor and friend, someone she truly admired and respected. We are so sorry to hear of his passing.

Nina and I had the pleasure of meeting Peter through the National History Day Competition. We will forever remember each time a winner was called out because we would jokingly look at each other (Almost every time) and say "And the winning entry was from.....Montville H.S. under guidance of Mr. Peter Porter!" We will miss him and will definitely be thinking of a big presence that will be missed at this year's competition. Your family will be in our prayers here at School of Government & Public Administration at Eastside High School in Paterson.
God Bless!

We are greatly saddened by the loss of Mr. Porter. My son met him first as his golf team coach and by participating in National History Day. Mr. Porter was a special teacher, he was the type of teacher you would hope your child would have in their educational career. He was more than a kind soul, he was an extraordinary person who always took the time to say hello and see how your day was going. We were very blessed to have such a great teacher in our district, and he will be so greatly missed! My condolences to his family.

What a great teacher and great guy. Always willing to help and not afraid to joke around. I ate countless lunches in his classroom as he enjoyed hanging out with some of his favorite students during his own personal time. Although he always did no how to have a good time, while keeping others egos in check. RIP to a great man, caretaker, teacher and friend!

I had Mr. Porter my freshman year and every year after he was a constant in my life. He truly cared about not only myself, but all his students. I will never forget his room and how much his lively and loving spirit filled the space--a presence that no one else could or will ever achieve. You will be missed by not only me, but every other MTHS student whose heart you've touched. Thank you.
